‘Something about tonight’: Queens of the Stone Age rock Don Valley Bowl

This week sees the return of Rock and Roll Circus in Sheffield, with legendary band Queens of the Stone Age closing their double headline slot on Thursday night.

Performing hits like ‘No One Knows’, ‘I Sat By The Ocean’ and ‘Little Sister’, the group had the festival jumping in the palm of their hand. In typical English festival fashion, pints were thrown, shoes were destroyed, and “Yorkshire’ was chanted a million times.

Lead singer and frontman Josh Homme said at the end of the set: “Something about tonight. Tonight is f***ing amazing.”

The band were on top form with not a beat missed, and the same went for the crowd. I do wonder how many are heading home with head-banging induced whiplash, however.

This follows their sold-out show on Wednesday night, with the Thursday 28 date being added due to ‘phenomenal demand’.

The band curated both their dates of Rock and Roll Circus themselves, bringing artists like Viagra Boys, The Murder Capital and Circa Waves along for the ride.

Despite an hour of classic Sheffield rain on Thursday, crowds still flocked to both the Electric Carousel and BBC Introducing stages to see the smaller yet equally brilliant acts.

Littered amongst the seemingly constant music was some truly impressive circus performances, from juggling to tight rope routines to Fontaines DC – it was a fever dream.

Whilst the Sheff reign of the Queens is over, there are still three more days, and three more fabulous headliners, of Rock and Roll Circus to go.

Tonight, notorious rock star Bryan Adams will take to the Big Top tent, joined by British icon and Spice Girl Mel C.

Local artists Sundress, Feur and Alice Ede are also on the line-up, stacking up the bill with some Sheffield talent.

The weekend will see Reverend and The Makers headline Saturday, and 90s classic James will close the final big festival of the season.

If the past two nights have given you major FOMO, no panic, there are still tickets for the next three days on Rock and Roll Circus’ website here.
