Benedict Cumberbatch has opened up about things becoming ‘a bit toxic’ with Olivia Colman while filming their new film.

The pair play married couple Theo and Ivy in new comedy drama The Roses, which has been released in cinemas today,

The flick follows the bitter breakdown of their relationship and things continue to disintegrate as they extract revenge on each other, leaving their lives in tatters.

Benedict and Olivia are close pals in real life, adding an electric layer to their chemistry on screen – but the Sherlock star explained that they hit a ‘speed bump’ on set.

Describing filming as an ‘enjoyable experience, he told Yahoo Entertainment: ‘There was one speed bump where it started to get a bit toxic, and I was like, “I might need to check in with you as a friend, because this is getting a bit nasty now”.

‘But after that, it was just a lot of fun insulting each other and making it up [to one another].’

‘I can’t remember exactly what it was, but I just thought, Oh, if we’re doing a scene and having a moment together, chatting on set and doing it, and then I’m going off and doing things – I just need to clear the air and [remind myself] it’s okay, we’re good, we’re here, we’re helping each other. It’s all the same as it was before the gloves started coming off.

‘So, the short answer is it was a lot of fun, but I did — I had a blip.’

According to the outlet, the particular scene where they hit a ‘speed bump’ saw a fight break out between the warring couple, which wildly escalated.

Olivia insisted that they were totally fine with each other when the director called cut, as they knew it was ‘all pretend’.

‘After that, we’d just go “aww” and we would always have a little cuddle at the end of a scene,’ she added.

“Couldn’t get away with it in real life, I don’t think so. I might try it just to see if I can get away with it!”

The Roses serves as a remake of the 1989 comedy starring Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas, titled War of the Roses.

Olivia and Benjamin lead the star-studded cast alongside Kate McKinnon, Jamie Dimitriou, Allison Janney, Ncuti Gatwa and Andy Samberg.

‘Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Ivy (Olivia) and Theo (Benedict): successful careers, a loving marriage, great kids,’ the official synopsis reads.

‘But beneath the façade of their supposed ideal life, a storm is brewing – as Theo’s career nosedives while Ivy’s own ambitions take off, a tinderbox of fierce competition and hidden resentment ignites.’

The Roses is in cinemas now.
