Coronation Street star Tanisha Gorey has spoken out about her alter-ego, Asha Alahan’s heartbreak at losing her twin brother, Aadi Alahan (Adam Hussain) who has left the cobbles for a fresh start in India.

While Asha has taken a relatively quiet period recently, the same can’t be said for Aadi.

Starting with the party from hell, that lead to Lauren Bolton’s (Cait Fitton) terrifying ordeal, to plunging the family business into £12,000 of debt, leading to a bungled inside-job burglary in order to claim on the insurance that he’d fallen behind on, Aadi’s been up to his neck in trouble over the past few months.

Following his confession to both Lauren and his dad, Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin), leading to his arrest, Aadi decided to seek a fresh start in India.

One person who is less than thrilled by this turn of events is Asha.

When asked about how her character feels about now being separated from her twin, Tanisha said: ‘She’s absolutely distraught about Aadi leaving, they aren’t just twins but they are also best friends.

‘Although they have a love/hate relationship – deep down they are best friends and she’s terrified.

‘He supports her so much and is the only person who she can really trust.

‘[It will make] her feel even more isolated.’

When asked who she feels her character can turn to for support in Aadi’s absence, Tanisha mused: ‘I don’t actually know who she would feel like she could lean on…

‘Maybe Nina (Mollie Gallagher) – she’s a really good friend to Asha, and of course they got together which didn’t work out, but they’ve remained really good friends. But I don’t think Asha will want to talk about this to anyone because she feels so alone and doesn’t want to admit that to anyone.’

Of course, Aadi’s exit is part of a larger story for Asha, surrounding her struggles with her mental health. Asha will take centre stage in a special episode which sees her suffer a debilitating panic attack and show what lead to it in a flashback.

‘She’s absolutely spiralling, but I don’t think she realises just how bad she is feeling and of course without talking to anyone about it, she’s not going to get the help that she desperately needs,’ Tanisha said of Asha’s current mental state.

On being entrusted with a special episode, she said: ‘It’s a role that carries a huge responsibility, and I hope we’ve done justice to the reality so many face.

‘If this story reaches even one person, sparks a conversation, or offers a moment of understanding, then it’s served its purpose’
