A festival celebrating Native American heritage ended in bloodshed after a minivan tore through crowds, injuring three people.

One of the victims, a seven-year-old boy, is in critical condition, and two adults are in the hospital after the accident at the Kipona Festival in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

The driver of the van has been taken into custody for questioning, according to the Dauphin County District Attorney’s Office.

The smash happened as police were clearing the festival grounds before its closure.

Some local businesses on South Front Street, where the accident happened, have shut while police investigate.

Festival vendor Lottie Beauverd told ABC27: ‘This car came flying down through here fast. Not yelling or anything, but just flying down through this.’

The Kipona Festival is held annually on Labor Day Weekend. ‘Kipona’ means ‘sparkling water’ to the local Susquehannock and Shawanese tribes in Pennsylvania.

Events include traditional Pow-Wows, arts and crafts, food trucks, fireworks and fun for the family.

Other witnesses said attendees of the festival screamed and ran as the van tore through the displays.

Earlier this year, a man suspected of drug driving was dragged out of his car after striking Liverpool fans in a parade.

The 53-year-old is accused of having been under the influence of drugs when he crashed his vehicle through the parade, injuring 65 people, including four children.

Fans were seen being catapulted into the air, with some trapped under the wheels of the grey Ford Galaxy.

Screams filled the air as bystanders scrambled to help the victims, while others shouted for emergency services.

The suspect is said to have tailgated an ambulance racing to a person who was suffering a heart attack before unleashing horror on the city’s streets.

Radoslav Stamboliev, who filmed the clip of the driver going through the crowd, said he thought the driver was ‘coming straight for us deliberately, completely straight faced’ and said there were children ‘everywhere’.
