Netflix viewers rush to watch ‘baffling’ thriller despite brutal reviews

Netflix viewers haven’t been put off poor reviews for a new revenge thriller series, instead sending it flying up the charts.

Released on the streaming service at the weekend, the limited Spanish series Two Graves is told across three episodes.

A Spanish series created by Agustín Martínez, it’s set in the aftermath of two teens, Verónica Marín (Nadia Vilaplana) and Marta Salazar (Zoe Arnao), disappearing.

When the investigation is deemed closed due to a lack of evidence, Verónica’s grandmother, Isabel (Kiti Mánver), takes matters into her own hands in a bid to track down the 16-year-olds.

Isabel (Kiti Mánver), who has been described as having nothing to lose, makes the decision to carry out an investigation ‘beyond the law’.

It’s been teased that: ‘After two teenagers go missing in a small town in Málaga, Isabel will stop at nothing to find out what happened to her granddaughter. To uncover the truth, she teams up with Rafael, a dangerous man who also lost his daughter that same night. Together, they’ll cross every line, discovering that revenge is a journey that doesn’t always end the way you expect.’

The series stars Kiti Mánver, Álvaro Morte and Hovik Keuchkerian, as well as Nadia Vilaplana, Joan Solé, Zoe Arnao, Nonna Cardoner, Carlos Scholz, and Salva Reina.

Speaking to Netflix’s Tudum about his series, Martínez explained: ‘Two Graves is a revenge story led by a character rarely seen at the heart of fiction, someone who could only find her place on a platform like Netflix: a grandmother willing to do whatever it takes to seek justice for the loss of her granddaughter.

‘A thriller full of emotion and unexpected twists, brought to life by Kiti Mánver, Álvaro Morte and Hovik Keuchkerian, characters I truly enjoyed writing.’

However early reviews for Two Graves have been anything but glowing.

‘Two Graves is an enjoyable series if you don’t look too deep but the lack of logic sometimes can get a bit baffling,’ LeisureByte wrote in its review.

‘What begins as a crime series with an unexpected lead –a grandmother played by Kiti Mánver in full “I will kill for my niece” mode– (…) soon morphs into a revenge tale (…) riddled with plot holes, implausible moments and twists,’ MundoCine shared.

These weren’t enough to put viewers off though, with some also sharing their thoughts after binging the series.

‘The suspense is killing & will keep you hooked till the very end. This is a must watch! Solid 8/10,’ Mfoniso posted on X.

‘The story is dark, full of twists, and makes you question right and wrong. Add to your watchlist ASAP,’ Emmanuel shared.

‘Two Graves on Netflix…excellent so far,’ user thebiochemicalx added.

Digital Mafia Talkies, however, wondered why the series had been presented in three parts when it could have been released as a feature film.

‘I think the most underreported or underobserved phenomenon in the post-Covid-19 entertainment landscape is the act of allegedly releasing movies as miniseries,’ they said.

‘I have tried to figure out why storytellers do this, and I have always drawn a blank.’

On IMDB, the miniseries has a 6.2/10 rating, with sharicita writing: ‘Quick binge with only three episodes. Nothing revolutionary but I’m trash for a Spanish crime drama so I ate this show up with a spoon anyway.

‘There are some surprises in there but I saw the very last scene coming about a mile away. But the setting and pacing were great, the show doesn’t waste much time on filler which was nice.’

Two Graves is now streaming on Netflix.
