Angel Reese was one of the WNBA’s most talked-about players during her rookie season in 2024. Reese set records on the court, made the All-Star team as a rookie and nearly led the Chicago Sky to the playoffs before a wrist injury ended her campaign.
The Chicago Sky made several changes in the offseason, and it’s safe to say that they didn’t exactly work out. The Sky are mathematically eliminated from playoff contention near the end of the WNBA’s regular season, and Reese voiced her frustrations in a recent interview.
The former top 10 draft pick explained that the team needed more talent if the front office wants to seriously compete, and seemed to threaten that she may leave the team if personnel changes aren’t made.
Angel Reese Examines Her WNBA Future
During an interview with the Chicago Tribune, Reese said that she “might have to move in a different direction and do what’s best for me” if the Sky aren’t able to surround her with more talent this year in free agency.
After the team’s win over the Connecticut Sun on Wednesday night, Reese clarified the intent behind her comments.
“I think the language is taken out of context. I really didn’t intentionally mean to put down my teammates, because they’ve been through this with me throughout the whole year,” she said.
“I want to apologize to my teammates, which I already have about the article and how it was misconstrued about what was said. And I just have to be better with my language.”
Reese added that she’s been frustrated with herself this season, and that appears to have led to a sense of frustration with the organization as a whole.
What Happened to Reese’s Team This Season?
The Sky made major changes after a promising 2024 campaign, including firing former head coach and WNBA legend Teresa Weatherspoon – one of Reese’s biggest advocates on the team. Chicago also chose not to re-sign Chennedy Carter in free agency, despite her being the team’s leading scorer.
The Sky are 10-30 with only four games remaining in the WNBA’s regular season. Reese will be back for year three with the team that drafted her in 2026, but we’ll see if the team makes changes that allow them to compete with the WNBA’s elite teams.
If they don’t, it could be a matter of time before Reese decides to take her talents elsewhere – or requests to be traded.
