Why One NFL Stadium Will Have Undercover Cops Dressed as Opposing Fans

The Seattle Seahawks are taking an interesting approach to cracking down on unruly fans this NFL season.

The team announced Thursday that “undercover law enforcement officers will wear opposing team jerseys at home games this season in an effort to quickly detect guests violating the fan code of conduct.”

“Law enforcement and Lumen Field event staff will proactively intervene to support an environment where all fans can enjoy the game,” the statement continued.

Among the “unruly behavior” that undercover officers will be looking out for are over-intoxication, offensive language or obscene gestures, game interference, smoking and verbal or physical harassment.

The announcement was met with mixed reactions from fans with some calling the plan “entrapment.”

“Makes me sad that is a necessary step to take. Haven’t been to a game in years, but it didn’t used to be toxic,” one social media user wrote. “Weird I never see any bad behavior at all the games I’ve been to there,” another shared. “Why announce it? Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of being ‘undercover’?” a third chimed in.

The Seahawks will take on the San Francisco 49ers during the home opener on Sunday, September 7.
