The husband of a woman missing in Greece has confirmed her dead from only her remains.

Michele Bourda, 59, disappeared from the beach of Ofrinio, near the city of Kavala, more than a month ago.

She was found on a yacht near the privately owned islet of Fidonisi, Greek coastguard confirmed.

Her husband Christos said he was ‘utterly devastated’ by the news and said he would pursue charges against authorities for their ‘criminally slow’ response.

He added that he had struggled to recognise his wife from her bones.

‘I did what I could to recognise my wife because she was only bones … It’s a tragedy’, he said.

Michele’s remains were discovered 40km from where she disappeared on a sun lounger.

CCTV showed the couple enjoying crepes on the beach just hours before the incident.

Her body was finally located by police and was found half-naked, without a head and partially eaten by fish, her husband said.

While she had suffered from depression, Michele was in good spirits the day she vanished, the Guardian reported.

Christos said he believed police had not put much effort into the search because his wife was a foreigner, leaving him to scour the coastline for her himself.

He said: ‘She had psychological issues. I told them that from the start and they weren’t able to find her.

‘It’s impossible. Nobody did anything to help. Even the chap who saw her in the sea, he lost sight of her.

‘If they are a foreigner they do not care about you here.’

Officials now believe that Michele drowned before her body was taken by strong sea currents.
