At least 24 people have been left injured as Typhoon Peipah hit central Japan.
Some 40 houses in the Shizuoka Prefecture were damaged after the tropical storm made it’s way through early on Friday afternoon.
Tiles were blown off roofs and utility poles collapsed in the strong winds.
Three people were severely wounded in the Makinohara municipality, and 20 others were injured.
In Shizouka, shops and homes were damaged by the strong gusts and multiple people were injured from smashed glass.
A restaurant employee told Japan Today: ‘I was scared because the building jolted harder than in an earthquake even though it is made of reinforced concrete.’
Six houses were completely destroyed, while another 34 were partially damaged.
An agricultural greenhouse was also blown away, leaving a farmer with a severe facial fracture.
Some 17,000 homes were hit with power outages.
Typhoon Peipah is the 15th tropical storm to hit Japan this year.
It made landfall in western Japan early on Friday and moved east along the Pacific coast.
Heavy rainfall is now expected today with 120 mm predicted in the Kanto-Koshin area, which includes Tokyo.
Shizuoka airport has also seen a 113 mm in one hour – making it a new local record.
