Although critics and users were somewhat split on the last two seasons of True Detective, the former were ultimately on the bandwagon for Season 4, and for the most part, Season 3. However, no stretch of the popular HBO Max series has matched the combined rave reviews that poured in during Season 1, led by Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Michelle Monaghan and Michael Potts.
McConaughey fueled the series debut in Season 1, earning rarely seen high marks from both critics and fans on the popular review site Rotten Tomatoes. True Detective Season 1 received a 92 percent approval rating from both sides, making it unsurprising that the popular actor’s opinion on the cast has been a topic of conversation, a trend that continued after the news that Nicolas Cage was in talks to star in Season 5.
Matthew McConaughey Comments on Nicolas Cage Potentially Starring in ‘True Detective’
The news of Cage being in talks to star in the fifth season of True Detective was first reported by Deadline, which highlighted that the 61-year-old actor “has been circling the part for a while.” Although it’s not quite a done deal, the site also pointed out that finalizing Jodie Foster’s deal to lead True Detective Season 4, Night Country, also took some time to come together.
However, during a recent interview with Variety, McConaughey was asked for his thoughts about Cage stepping into the role, and the Interstellar star offered a positive response on the potential pairing. McConaughey even went as far as calling it a “tasty combination” on two occasions.
“I heard that the other day, is it true? McConaughey responded. “Alright. Nicolas…that sounds like a tasty combination.”
When McConaughey was then asked if he had any advice for Cage, the 55-year-old essentially said the next potential True Detective star doesn’t need any.
“I know Nicolas well enough to know that Nicolas is going to do his version of Nicolas, and I think that’s a tasty combination, so alright, that’s good news.”
From the sound of it, McConaughey appears to be a big fan of the choice and more than happy with the potential of Cage leading the way in True Detective Season 5.
Per Deadline, Season 5 is expected to begin filming in 2026, with True Detective returning sometime in 2027.
