Charlie Sheen Recalls ‘Biggest Betrayal’ by His Father Martin

Charlie Sheen got very candid about his relationship with his family, including his father, actor Martin Sheen, during a new interview.

Charlie, who turned 60 last week, appeared on “Good Morning America” with Michael Strahan Monday to discuss his memoir “The Book of Sheen,” which releases tomorrow. In the 368-page work, the former “Two and a Half Men” and Major League star openly discusses his checkered past, which includes lengthy battles with substance abuse.

At one point, Charlie recounts when his father turned him in to police for violating probation in 1998 after he overdosed on cocaine and suffered a stroke as a result.

While Martin Sheen may have had his son’s best interests in mind, Charlie didn’t see it that way at the time.

“It felt like the biggest betrayal you could possibly endure,” he explained.

Strahan asked the Wall Street actor if he recognized his father did what he did out of “love.”

“[I] saw it as love eventually,” Charlie admitted. “But in the moment, it’s like, in the book when my bodyguard comes to the bedroom door and he says, ‘You know, the US Marshals are on the way. We’re leaving in five.'”

Sheens’ father-son bond lives on

Charlie, who is now eight years sober, said that despite all of his trials and tribulations, his dad has remained by his side.

The 85-year-old acting legend is currently halfway through his son’s new memoir, Charlie revealed.

“He said, ‘Your use of humor in your darkest moments is a gift to the reader,'” the younger Sheen added.

A Netflix series is also on the way

In addition to his new book, Charlie Sheen is also set to be the subject of two-part Netflix documentary series “aka Charlie Sheen,” debuting Sept. 10.

“I’d like to believe that it will reach people that are in similar pain,” Charlie told E! about the project, “and feel like they’re not alone.”

In his interview with Strahan, Sheen made it clear that the fact he’s still around to produce these works is somewhat miraculous in and of itself.

“This story should have ended 100 times, 20 years ago, and it didn’t,” he said. “So, whatever happens next might be where some of the real gold has been hidden.”
