Afreximbank pumps R87 million into SA infrastructure projects

Infrastructure South Africa has signed a landmark agreement with African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), on Monday, in Algeria to accelerate infrastructure projects in South Africa.

The entities finalised the deal at the week-long Intra-Africa Trade Fair 2025 in Algeria.

AFREXIMBANK X INFRASTRUCTURE SOUTH AFRICA AGREEMENT

The landmark agreement will help establish a Joint Project Preparation Facility for South African infrastructure projects.

Afreximbank set aside $5 million (roughly R87 million) for the project.

The financial institute will provide financial expertise, while Infrastructure South Africa handles the strategic oversight.

They will focus on advancing projects in critical sectors, including energy, transport, logistics, and digital infrastructure.

MINISTER DEAN MACPHERSON PUTS HIS STAMP OF APPROVAL

Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson welcomed the partnership in a statement released on 8 September 2025.

Macpherson said the initiative would help achieve the department’s goal of turning South Africa into a construction site.

Macpherson has been vocal about developing the country’s infrastructure and closing the infrastructure gap.

He congratulated Infrastructure South Africa’s acting chair, Mameetse Masemola, for implementing the initiative.

Additionally, Macpherson highlighted that the agreement would strengthen South Africa’s infrastructure projects pipeline and attract development finance institutions and investors.

The partnership will accelerate the preparation of high-quality, bankable projects that will unlock investment and stimulate economic growth.

AFREXIMBANK’S DEDICATION TO AFRICA’S DEVELOPMENT

Afreximbank is a multilateral finance institution aimed at supporting intra- and extra-African trade, industrialisation, and export development.

Its main goal is to transform trade in Africa through stimulating consistent expansion, diversifying and developing African trade.

Moreover, it organised the Intra-African Trade Fair in collaboration with the African Union Commission.

The fair fosters engagement between African governments, businesses, sellers and investors and encourages delegates to participate in the African Continental Free Trade.
