TikTok star Jake Kind, who is known online as Goobi Gubbi, has reacted to the devastating passing of his grandmother, whom we all grew to refer to as Mimmy.
TikTok is full of silly trends and dark stories, but once in a while, there is some truly heartwarming content. Enter Goobi Gubbi and Mimmy, the grandmother and grandson pairing we didn’t realise we needed. With 663k followers, Goobi’s account proved that you can be an OAP and NOT be a raging bigot; Mimmy accepted her queer grandson with a fierce loyalty, and despite his chaotic antics.

Mimmy had been battling health issues for years, and back in March, her grandson revealed that she had been diagnosed with “10 — like, legitimately 10 — primary cancers, congestive heart failure and lung disease and still is going strong.”
On Friday, Goobi Gubbi posted a pre-recorded video where Mimmy announced her own passing – an icon to the end.
“If you are watching this, it means I’m dead,” she said. “I had the most fabulous life. I travelled the world, and we went all over. We had phenomenal people that we did everything with.”
Still reeling from the devastating loss, Goobi Gubbi posted a super long message to his Instagram on Wednesday. Grab the tissues.

In an 18-page carousel, Jake shared family stories, personal anecdotes, and tons of pictures of Mimmy as he celebrated her life.
“When Mimmy and I were in the same room, we would not shut up. Whether it was playing board games, writing and editing essays, or reading aloud the celebrity tea in People Magazine, we were a cacophony of unrelenting chitchat. Her favourite word was always ‘fabulous’. Mine was ‘Mimmy,” he said.
Goobi and Mimmy enjoyed food together, travelling, and writing essays, and that was all before they made their way onto TikTok.
He continued: “So, by the time TikTok came along, Mimmy had created, in essence, a monster – a mini replica nearly ready to set the world on fire. It all started with me making short videos lip-syncing to sounds and writing funny captions. Those videos did fine. Nothing special. The issue was I still was scared to use my voice.

“It wasn’t until I found the courage to use my actual voice and record Mimmy and me together that a magical spark ignited and spread like wildfire across the internet. We filmed outfit of the days, the most ridiculous banter in her apartment’s front door, gossip in the 501, food reviews, and even a mini-series of us accidentally losing Pop-Pop’s gravesite. Babygirl, I promise we won’t do that to you too…only because you’ll obviously be buried next to Pop-Pop, whose grave we now have tagged on Google Maps.”
He shared one final message to his followers
In the last few slides, Goobi Gubbi recalled Mimmy’s illustrious TikTok career, acting as grandmother to “an iconic army of phone addicted girls and gays.”
Rounding off, he said, “Together, Mimmy and I gained over a million followers across platforms. But all of that came second to the fact that we recorded thousands of moments together – moments that I’ll be able to rewatch for the rest of my life. A life I want to live as Mimmy had lived hers. And to live as intensely as Mimmy did means to embrace grief with open arms.
@goobigubbi
“It’s heartbreaking to lose your best friend. But it’s been soul-crushing to know that I’ll have to go through so much of my life without her. Yet, in that tumultuous sea of grief, I’ve found these memories in my phone and in my heart. They are the life jacket that I cling to until I can wade back to shore. Until I can think again. Remember. Give thanks. Be happy and smile. And once I’m back on the shore, I remember that whether I like it or not, I also have Mimmy’s voice.
“It’s with me for as long as I live. And as a result, so is she. Period, hard stop. Mimmy will always be my favourite word. I love you. I’m so grateful for you. And, I already miss you so much. Rest up, mamas. The diva may be down, but I promise you, I’ll keep looking up.”
Rest easy, queen.
