Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha believes there is a good chance Marc Guehi would turn down a move to Liverpool and head to Old Trafford after urging his old side to sign the Crystal Palace star.

Guehi was poised to join Liverpool on transfer deadline day in a £35million deal, completing a medical and agreeing a contract with a farewell video from Crystal Palace even leaked online.

Palace pulled the plug at the very last minute however as they were unable to bring in a suitable replacement for the captain.

The England international has entered the final 12 months of his contract at Selhurst Park and will leave the club on a free transfer next summer with Liverpool still firm favourites to sign him.

Their failure to wrap up the deal leaves the door open for rival clubs to hijack their move however with Barcelona and Real Madrid interested in signing him, free to start pre-contract negotiations from January.

Chelsea and Arsenal have also been credited with firm interest in the Londoner but Saha believes United should be making every effort to bring him to Old Trafford.

Reigning champions Liverpool are undoubtedly the more attractive proposition right now with the arrivals of Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike this summer providing the platform to tighten their grip on English football

But despite their dismal 2024-25 campaign, United demonstrated they still have considerable drawing power when it comes to signing established names, seeing off rival interest to sign Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko in the summer transfer window.

And were United to throw their hat in the ring with the right offer, Saha believes they would have a strong chance of getting the deal done.

‘Marc Guehi is very strong, very solid, very reliable, quick and a good leader,’ Saha told Flashscore who offer the latest sports betting apps.

‘There is a lot of quality in that boy. I do think that he is the type of player who can really help Manchester United’s season.

‘It’s definitely an opportunity to hijack this and stop Liverpool getting stronger. It would be a smart move. I don’t think he would turn down United if the bid goes in correctly.

‘There will be only six months left on this contract, there is definitely an opportunity there.’

For now at least, United are reliably stocked at the back with Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez and Ayden Heaven at Ruben Amorim’s disposal.
