After officially announcing its new battle royale mode for Battlefield 6, EA is inviting fans to sign up and playtest it this week.
Even if it hadn’t been leaked beforehand, it was always a safe bet that Battlefield 6 would feature a battle royale mode. There were hints of it as early as 2021 and it just made sense considering the game needs to compete with Call Of Duty: Warzone.
Battlefield 6’s pre-release hype so far has focused primarily on the core multiplayer (with the open beta proving very popular), but now EA has begun discussing details for the battle royale mode.
It doesn’t seem to have an official name at this point but rumours suggest it’s called Firestom, the same as the battle royale mode from Battlefield 5. The good news is that you can try it out this week… if you’re successfully picked to playtest it.
How to join the Battlefield 6 battle royale playtest
Registering for the playtest is very simple, since all you need to do is sign up for Battlefield Labs, EA’s unique community space that allows fans to participate in early playtesting.
First, make sure you have an EA account, which you can do on EA’s website. You’ll then need to link it to a gaming platform of your choice. So, for example, if you plan to play Battlefield 6 on PlayStation 5, link it to your PlayStation account.

Once that’s sorted, simply follow this link to EA’s Playtesting Portal, where you can sign up for Battlefield Labs. Do remember, you’re not guaranteed to be accepted into the playtest, but you do at least have a chance and can potentially make it into any future Battlefield playtests as well.
If you do make it in, you will need to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) and not share any details whatsoever online; something global community manager Kevin Johnson is keen to remind everyone.
Even if such leaks are arguably inevitable, you don’t really want to be the one to do it, in the event you get caught.
What is the Battlefield 6 battle royale?
EA has provided a lengthy explanation of Battlefield 6’s battle royale mode and while it will feature ‘the core principles of Battlefield’ – gadgets, explosives, destructible environments, and vehicles – it very much sounds like what you’d expect.
100 players split across four teams of 25 drop into a large map and compete to be the last team standing, acquiring loot and completing missions to earn rewards and get stronger.
Since this is still Battlefield 6 though, you get to pick one of the game’s four classes – assault, support, engineer, and recon – so teams can either have a decent balance of all four or focus on just one or two of them.
There’ll also be a large ring surrounding the map – one EA boasts as ‘the most dangerous ring in gaming’ – that gradually closes in and kills anyone it touches: ‘There’s no jumping in and out of it, no using it for cover, no walking through it – if you get caught in it, you are done.’
Battlefield 6 release date
Battlefield 6 launches on October 10. It will be available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
