The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) says the chickens have come home to roost in the United States (US).
The party released a statement expressing concern about the escalation of gun violence in the US, following the fatal shooting of Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk.
Kirk, an ally of US President Donald Trump, was described by the EFF as a casualty of the very system he had championed.
EFF SAYS US NEEDS GUN CONTROL
The party said the gun violence statistics in the US are staggering, noting that they are not from a war zone but from a country that supposedly embodies security and democracy.
“The US Congress resists reform year after year, proving that the profits of gun manufacturers and the ideology of ‘freedom at all costs’ take precedence over the lives of schoolchildren. The case of Charlie Kirk is a mirror held up to American culture, as the so-called freedom to carry weapons has turned into a freedom to die by them,” the EFF said.
The party also claimed there are already attempts to use Kirk’s death as a pretext for more political violence and called on the US Congress to urgently implement stricter gun reforms.
EFF QUESTIONS US READINESS TO HOST FIFA WORLD CUP
The EFF further expressed concern about the US’s ability to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup safely. It said the recurring shootings and unchecked violence raise serious concerns about security in the country.
“FIFA cannot ignore this reality. It has a duty to ensure that all qualifying nations, their delegations, and ordinary supporters will be safe in a country where mass shootings are almost weekly news. A nation that cannot guarantee its children’s safety in classrooms cannot be assumed ready to protect the world on its soil,” the party wrote.
