Murder suspect’s mum issues desperate plea to family of the woman he killed, Iryna Zarutska

Decarlos Brown Jr’s mum, Michelle Dewitt, has addressed the family of Iryna Zarutska in a new interview, stating the refugee “deserved to live.”

Iryna Zarutska was killed on August 22 after she boarded the CATS bus in Charlotte, North Carolina. A Ukrainian refugee who fled Russia’s invasion, Iryna adopted the “American dream” with her mother and two younger siblings. Her father was forced to remain in Ukraine because of the war, and he wasn’t even able to attend her funeral.

The man responsible for the attack, Decarlos Brown Jr, had been suffering with mental health issues for some time, being diagnosed with schizophrenia and forced into a 14-day stay at a psychiatric facility.

Now, his mum has once again condemned his actions after earlier calling them “atrocious.” She also shared her hopes for forgiveness in the future.

Decarlos Brown Jr’s mum said she can’t begin to imagine the pain

In a new interview with the Charlotte Observer, Michelle noted how Iryna Zarutska “came from a place of destruction and still ended in destruction.”

She’s never lost a child, and can’t begin to imagine the pain it has caused Iryna’s family, but she hoped that one day they could forgive Decarlos Brown Jr for his crimes.

“I hope and pray that one day they find it in their heart to forgive my son, and that they realise that I am praying for their family,” she told the publication.

For now, Michelle has urged her son to listen to his lawyers, but she also addressed the calls for the death penalty from Donald Trump and United States Attorney General Pam Bondi.

“There’s a whole lot of parents that are in my situation… He needs to maybe step down from the White House and go visit the mental health facility without cameras and no one around,” she said.

Michelle earlier recalled how Decarlos came back “different” and with increasingly “aggressive” behaviour after his five-year prison stint

“He started saying weird things,” she said. “He started saying that he wasn’t in his body. The system failed him.”
