The University of Exeter has risen one place in the 2026 Guardian University Rankings.
Now ranking 17th nationally, the university is up one place from last year’s assessment.
The Guardian’s University Rankings offer a comprehensive way for students to compare and choose universities. The Guardian uses its own methodology, reviewing factors such as student satisfaction, student-to-staff ratios, and post-study career prospects.
Its position this year means the University of Exeter has retained its ranks within the UK’s top 20 universities.
Exeter’s President and Vice Chancellor, Professor Lisa Roberts, said: “We’re delighted with this outstanding result, which sees us move up a place to number 17. We are comfortably in the UK top 20 in all three major UK league tables.
“This recognises the dedication of our entire community in delivering a high quality educational experience, and our unwavering commitment to addressing the challenges of creating a greener, fairer, healthier society.
“I’d like to extend huge thanks and congratulations to all our staff, students and supporters for the part they play in our ongoing success.”
As part of its assessment, the Guardian ranks universities by different subjects. Exeter had 23 subjects in the top 20, including two subjects in the top five.
Subjects that made the top 10 included: Electrical and electronic engineering (2nd), zoology (5th), psychology (6th), earth and marine sciences (8th), health professions (8th), theology and religion (11th), archaeology and anthropology (11th), classics and ancient history (12th), economics (12th), and Medicine (12th).
The university of Oxford, St Andrews, and Cambridge held their positions at the top of the league.
Meanwhile, non-Russell Group unis including Bath, Aberdeen, and Lancaster all placed ahead of Exeter, with Russell Groups like Liverpool and Glasgow falling just behind.
