Okay, half of TikTok, Reddit, and I are in full panic mode right now because tomorrow the final episode of The Summer I Turned Pretty drops. It might seem like nothing to some people, but for those of us who’ve been following the show since season one, it’s huge. We’re finally going to get the answer to the ultimate question: Who will Belly choose?
This season has been an emotional rollercoaster, from Jenny Han changing major scenes from the books to sneaking in niche Easter eggs. Jenny has said she wanted the show to be its own thing, which could also mean a different ending. And now, she’s given a major clue about Belly’s finale in The Summer I Turned Pretty.
So, what has Jenny Han said about Belly’s ending?
In a LA Times interview, Jenny talked about why she sent Belly to Paris. “Sending her to Paris in the wake of her broken engagement to college sweetheart Jeremiah was a necessary push out of her comfort zone,” Jenny said. “For many young people who are lucky enough to study abroad, that’s the moment when you go, ‘Oh, wow. This is harder than I thought.’ I think as a young person you need to test your mettle a little bit and find out what you’re made of. It’s so satisfying when you realise that you have the inner strength to keep going.”
According to Jenny, Belly’s time in Paris isn’t just about heartbreak; it’s about growth and independence. “Regardless of how her love life shakes out, Belly’s Paris era is crucial for her to learn that she can be OK on her own. And she can have experiences outside the Cousins Beach bubble,” she explained. “I think you have to find out who you are alone before you can really be with somebody else.”
So, who will Belly choose?
Jenny emphasised that the show is about Belly’s journey into adulthood and self-discovery as much as it is about romance. She teased that “Conrad and Belly aren’t in the same place” right now.
Jenny explained, “She’s saying that she’s ready for something new this summer. And he’s something old coming back into her life. Are they going to meet at the same place in the road?”
Jenny has previously hinted that Belly might not choose either of the Fisher brothers and just focus on herself. Although she hasn’t confirmed if that will happen, her teasing that Conrad is something old that Belly is trying to move on from is a major clue.
Only one more sleep, and we’ll finally know who Belly chooses at the end.
