The Swedish metal band At The Gates made the upsetting announcement on their social media page that frontman and lead vocalist Tomas Lindberg has died. The singer was 52 and was a founding member of the band since its formation in 1990 in Gothenburg, Sweden.
“Tomas passed away this morning following complications related to his ongoing cancer treatment. Despite intensive medical efforts, his life could not be saved,” said the band about his passing.
“Tomas – You were an inspiration to us all. A true friend, both compassionate & sympathetic. You will always be remembered for your generosity and your creative spirit,” they added.
Tomas Lindberg Died After Battling Cancer
In August, the band made a lengthy announcement on their Facebook page to explain their absence to fans. A message from Lindberg revealed he was diagnosed in December 2023 with Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma (a cancer in the mouth and palate). The singer underwent a major surgery that led to the removal of a large portion of the roof of his mouth.
His treatment was followed by two months of radiation, with Lindberg commenting on the long road to recovery. At the start of 2025, he faced a major setback in his recovery when doctors found remaining cancer cells that were inaccessible by surgery and radiation.
“It has been a very tough year,” he commented in the post.
He added, “Please respect that we don’t want to make a big thing about all this, and that I won’t be answering interviews concerning the cancer, the treatment, or the recovery. We just wanted this to be out in the open, as we wanted to explain to our fans why we have been quiet for such a long time. I hope you all are well. Take care of yourself, your loved ones, and the time you have on this earth.”
The At the Gates frontman also revealed the band had recorded the vocals new album before undergoing surgery, with the band commenting they could “not wait any longer” to release it.
“Now when everything about the future is a bit more unsure it feels good to deliver this album,” said Lindberg. “It is an album that we all are very proud of.”
The recorded album has yet to be released, or any clear news of a scheduled release date.
