Emmerdale spoilers follow for Wednesday’s (September 17) episode that is now available to view on ITVX. The episode in question will air on ITV1 on at 7:30pm.

The walls have finally closed in on Emmerdale killer John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) as Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) woke from his coma to tell his loved ones exactly what his husband is capable of.

John, as viewers know, has something of a hero complex, whereby he endangers the lives of those around them so that he can swoop in to save them at the last minute – and get showered in praise for doing so.

Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant) and Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) were both unknowingly endangered by John, who they subsequently thanked for ‘rescuing’ them.

John’s antics, as audiences know, caused Nate Robinson (Jurell Carter) to lose his life and the army medic covered up his crimes by disposing of the farmhand’s body in the lake, pinning the blame on surgery patient Owen Michaels, who he also allowed to die.

Aaron was unaware of his husband’s true nature until last week when he pieced together the puzzle during a getaway at a remote cottage, realising that John isn’t the good guy he claims to be.

Discovering that John had his missing friend Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb) in his grip, Aaron urged him to come clean.

Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley), however, turned up at this very moment, leading John to grab Aaron and throw the both of them from the edge of the gorge, pinning the blame for the crime on his love rival brother.

Robert, who was subsequently arrested and jailed, has professed his innocence over and over, with Victoria (Isabel Hodgins) and Chas refusing to believe his version of events. John’s recovery in hospital didn’t help matters as he continued to lie about Robert’s role in the incident, claiming his sibling tried to kill him and Aaron.

Aaron, meanwhile, was in a coma – and he was the only one who could back up Rob’s version of event. Robert urged Vic to keep John away from his former flame, knowing that he would likely kill him to keep his secrets buried.

Victoria was left with food for thought and soon her spidey senses started tingling as she noticed that John wasn’t particularly consumed with joy upon learning that Aaron will be woken up.

Much like Robert suspected, on the morning that doctors planned to wake Aaron from his coma, John entered his husband’s hospital room and tried to kill him.

As Aaron flatlined, John was met by an unsuspecting Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley), who he asked for a lift.

Chas and Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson), meanwhile, were devastated to discover that Aaron’s life was on the line but thankfully doctors managed to save him.

The question is: will John be caught before it’s too late? What’s more, now the race is truly on to locate missing Mack. Will he be okay?

That remains to be seen but upcoming scenes will see him inject himself with the syringe left by John – and he hallucinates Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins).

Charity, meanwhile, is notified of what’s gone on and thus begins her quest to find Mack. But will it be too little too late?

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1 or stream first from 7am on ITVX and YouTube.
