The student, originally from Hong Kong, was approached by two men on campus on September 4th after applying for a library alumni card. The men called him a refugee, and one man proceeded to punch the student several times, leaving his face badly bruised.

North Yorkshire Police said the man photographed “may have information that will assist our investigation.”

The student told The York Press that the attack was upsetting and a shock whilst living in York, he said: It’s really upsetting because York is a safe city and we love it. That’s the reason I picked York to study.”

A University of York spokesperson told The York Tab: “This is utterly indefensible…we will stand together against such acts of aggression.”

A previous Instagram post by the York Student Union acknowledged the Raise of Colours campaign taking place in York, with flags held across walkways between Campus East and West. YUSU Sabbatical Officers said they are working to ensure campus and York remain “safe spaces filled with diversity and multiculturalism.”

North Yorkshire Police confirmed it is working hard to identify those responsible. They urge anyone who recognises the male photographed to email tom.watson@northyorkshire.police.uk.
