Drag Race’s Trixie Mattel reveals what went down when she was alone in the dark with RuPaul

Trixie Mattel and Katya have been recapping season seven of RuPaul’s Drag Race on their podcast, and for any fan of the show it has been an absolute feast of behind the scenes gossip and context. I have loved every second of it, and I’m gutted they’ve just got to the finale and it’s all over. But as it all ended, Trixie and Katya gushed over their love and admiration of RuPaul and shared some unseen and previously unheard anecdotes of one on one time with Ru. RuPaul famously does not speak that much to queens, but Trixie said she was once in the dark (literally) with Ru, one on one in the Drag Race Werk Room, and the two had an intense chat alone no one’s ever heard before.

‘Did you ever hear my lights out story with RuPaul?’

RuPaul is renowned for never really speaking with queens on the show when the cameras aren’t rolling – and in recent years has an even more impersonal relationship with competitors. But Trixie Mattel says one time during season 11 she returned to Drag Race as a special guest and had an intense one to one time with RuPaul in the dark abandoned Werk Room. Kind of the stuff of terrifying nightmares and what dreams are made of at the same time.

Trixie says to Katya “Did you ever hear my lights out story with RuPaul? I was a guest on season 11 for a mini challenge and RuPaul and I were in the Werk Room alone. There was a blackout. The lights went out in the studio. So I was sitting, and when you’re not competing on Drag Race and it’s the thing where RuPaul is using you for a walkthrough it’s way more informal.

“RuPaul’s sitting there in the dark, she’s in her suit and I’m in my drag. And it was like my dream. Undiluted one on one time, off camera, and she knows about us [Trixie and Katya] but isn’t privy, like so privy. So she’s asking about you and I [Trixie and Katya], she’s asking about music, she’s asking about managers. Basically asking a working drag queen, I felt, what is your career like, what are you doing.

“I had this opportunity to sit in the dark and talk to her which is very high intimacy. To just sit in the dark with RuPaul’s voice in the dark Werk Room? Chilling. Very chilling.”

She further says, after Katya saying the scenario was “special”, that Ru asked “who owns your music” and Trixie said she does. RuPaul then asked “outright? That’s really important. Hold on to that as much as you can.”

Trixie continued: “When you get someone like RuPaul to give you wisdom, you file it.” Truly an iconic thought of Trixie being alone with RuPaul on the Drag Race set. Need to be a fly on that wall.
