RICHMOND COUNTY, Ga. (WJBF) – Wednesday morning, a 27-year-old white male inmate at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center was found unresponsive in his cell by detention personnel.
The inmate was housed alone as a preventative measure and was being checked on frequently by staff.
Upon discovering the inmate was unresponsive, detention personnel immediately called for medical staff, who responded and initiated lifesaving measures.
Central EMS arrived and took over care. The inmate was transported to Wellstar MCG, where he was later pronounced deceased.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been contacted and will serve as the lead investigative agency in this matter.
Sheriff Eugene Brantley stated: “The safety and well-being of every individual in our custody is a top priority for the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office. Any loss of life is tragic, and we extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of this individual during this difficult time. Our detention staff responded immediately and did everything possible to render aid until emergency medical personnel arrived. Out of respect for the family, we will not be releasing additional details until next of kin has been notified. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been requested to take the lead in this matter, and all further updates will be provided through their office as the investigation continues.”
No further information will be released by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office at this time.
