What we know about the Charlie Kirk suspect’s family, and how they helped the police

Tyler Robinson has been formally charged with the murder of Charlie Kirk. Officials have reported that Tyler Robinson was not cooperating, but many of his family members have been helping the police. Here’s what we know about the family of the Charlie Kirk suspect Tyler Robinson, and how they have been involved in the investigation.

Tyler Robinson’s parents led to the authorities arresting him

According to the New York Times, Tyler Robinson’s mother, Amber, noticed the photos of the suspected shooter in the news looked a lot like her son. She phoned him, and asked him where he was. Robinson claimed he was at home and ill. Robinson’s dad, Matthew, looked at pictures of the rifle the FBI thought was used to shoot Charlie Kirk. He noticed it resembled a gun their son had received as a present. They asked Robinson for pictures of the rifle, but he didn’t reply.

Text messages suggest the rifle used to belong to Robinson’s grandfather.

Court documents claim Robinson’s parents convinced him to come to their family home in Washington, Utah. Apparently, Robinson implied that he was the shooter, and expressed suicidal thoughts. Investigators say Robinson’s father encouraged him to turn himself in. The parents asked for help from a retired deputy sheriff they knew through the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He reported Robinson to the authorities, then drove him and the parents to the sheriff’s office.

The Charlie Kirk suspect’s family are telling the police about his political opinions

He seems to have different political opinions to his family members. His parents – Amber Denise Robinson and Matthew Carl Robinson – are both registered Republicans. In the text exchange that authorities say is between Robinson and his partner, Robinson said that “since trump got into office” his dad “has been pretty diehard MAGA” . State records show Robinson did register to vote, but hasn’t voted in a general election. When he was a young child, he became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Utah County Attorney has said Amber Robinson told the police her son’s views had become more liberal, and “more pro-gay and trans-rights oriented” over the last few years.

According to the Utah Governor Spencer Cox, one family member said Robinson had become more “political” recently. They described a mealtime conversation in which people discussed Charlie Kirk coming to Utah Valley University, and Robinson criticised Charlie Kirk’s opinions. Cox said: “They talked about why they didn’t like him and the viewpoints that he had.” Interviews with Robinson’s friends and families have led authorities to believe he spent time looking at the “deep, dark internet, the Reddit culture and these other dark places.”

Tyler Robinson’s partner has been helping the authorities

Tyler Robinson was living with his romantic partner, who is transitioning from male to female. US authorities have referred to this person as Robinson’s “roommate”.

Spencer Cox said: “This partner has been very cooperative, had no idea that this was happening.” Text messages that are allegedly between Robinson and his partner are now important evidence for the investigation.
