Coronation Street legend celebrates huge achievement with rarely seen son

Sally Dynevor is undoubtedly Coronation Street royalty having played the iconic Sally (the ally) Metcalfe for a mammoth forty years next year.

She’s been bringing audiences her own patented blend of humour, emotion and big, juicy stories during her time on the show. Major career goals, if you ask us, though the actress took to Instagram recently to share a much more personal achievement.

Raising money for Prevent Breast Cancer, a charity she adamantly supports following her own victory over the disease alongside her son, Sam, Sally recently began a gruelling trek up Mount Kilimanjaro, posting a photo after she reached the summit.

‘We made it. THANK YOU to everyone who sponsored us. @samdynevor and I really appreciate your donations to a wonderful charity @preventbreastcancer’ she began the caption.

‘The most incredible week. So challenging in every way. Thank you @adventurepeaks and the team for getting us there. @preventbreastcancer for organising. The best bunch of people ever. Love you all’

Her comments were flooded with support following her enormous achievement.

Co-star Sally Carman-Duttine (Abi Webster) wrote: You’re totally awesome Sal!!’, while real-life daughter Phoebe Dynevor added: ‘You guys are AMAZING. I’m so beyond proud’

Sally had previously uploaded a lovely picture with her son and climbing-buddy, Sam, captioning it: ‘Thank [you] @samdynevor for getting me through this week. Couldn’t have done this without my boy’ which fans and co-stars alike gushed over.

On-screen daughter, Brooke Vincent (Sophie Webster) left a string of red hearts, while former Street nemesis, Denise Welch (Natalie Horrocks) added: ‘Amazing the pair of you’.

Sally had also uploaded a picture as she undertook training, prior to the climb, alongside a team from the charity who were planning to make the trek alongside her and her son.

Sally announced her decision to undertake the five-day trek back in September.

‘I have no idea why I am doing this, but as a breast cancer survivor, I want to do as much as I can for this charity,’ she told BBC.

‘I’m up for anything and this is a great challenge, I’m really looking forward to it.’

Speaking on her own experiences with breast cancer, Sally said: ‘Because I was only 46, I really thought I was too young to get breast cancer.

‘But I’ve since realised it doesn’t matter what age you are – you need to check, and at the first sign of anything, go to your doctor and get it checked out.’

BBC also spoke to the chief executive of Prevent Breast Cancer Nikki Barraclough, who trekked alongside Sally and Sam.

She said: ‘The funds raised from the challenge will go to our research and it will be projects focussed on gene research, early detection and screening, preventative drugs and risk-reducing factors as well.’

Sally recently spoke about her future on the show amid rumours of a cast reduction following ITV’s decision to slash the budgets of both Coronation Street and Emmerdale.

Speaking to Woman’s Weekly, Sally told them that she’s: ‘not a retiring person’.

‘If they still want me, maybe I’ll be in the show in my 70s and 80s. I’ll just keep going! It’s such a great job and I feel very grateful I’ve still got it after 40 years. I’m not in it as much as I used to be, but I drove in the other day and, as the barrier went up, I just had this huge smile because it felt like I was home. I knew I was going to have a fun day,’ she added.
