Emergency services were called to Sunset Beach early on Thursday morning after a body was discovered near Sea Point Pavilion.
The Atlantic Seaboard Community Forum confirmed in a brief statement that authorities were seen cordoning off parts of the area as forensic teams began their initial investigation.
“Law enforcement agencies are currently attending to the scene,” the forum posted on its official Facebook page, alongside a photo of responders near the shoreline.
Circumstances remain unknown
At the time of publishing, the identity of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unknown.
Officials have not released any information about possible foul play or links to any missing persons.
The discovery has raised concern among residents, with many taking to social media to express shock and sympathy.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) and City law enforcement are expected to release further updates once a preliminary investigation has been completed.
Not the first time
This is not the first time a body has washed up in the same area in the last couple of weeks.
In late August, man’s body was discovered near the Sea Point tidal pool.
That particular incident followed another recent tragedy on the Sea Point Promenade earlier last month, when a man was believed to have taken his own life.
