A 32-year-old man has died after falling from a popular Alaskan hiking trail earlier this week.
On Tuesday, Sept. 16, the Alaska Department of Public Safety was called to a search and rescue for two adult males who had fallen from the Mount Roberts trail in Juneau. The men, who were cruise ships passengers, had slid down the mountainside.
While one of the men was brought to safety with only minor injuries, the other was found dead.
“The second man, 32-year-old Britian Pool of Texas, had slid further down the mountain and was located by drones operated by JMR, troopers, the Juneau Police Department and Alaska Department of Transportation,” Alaska State Troopers said in a press release. “Pool was deceased from injuries sustained during the fall.”
Pool’s body was recovered and transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.
According to Cruise Hive, four different cruise ships were visiting Juneau on Tuesday, though its unclear which one Pool and his companion were staying on.
Mount Roberts known for its ‘breathtaking’ views
Mount Roberts, which is located east of downtown Juneau, is a 3,819-foot mountain regarded for its scenic views and the Goldbelt Tram, which carries passengers from sea level to 1,800 feet up the mountain.
Tess Williams, a spokeswoman for the Alaska State Troopers, told the Associated Press that the two men had accidentally gone down a path that was not an actual trail but was located near the Goldbelt Tram.
“Williams said at the time of the incident it was dark with dense fog and periods of light rain. She said the ground was soggy and wet, and conditions off trail were slick,” the AP wrote.
This is the second notable cruise-related death in Alaska in recent months. Back in July, a Kentucky woman was found dead in the mountains above Juneau after failing to return to her cruise ship following a hike.
