Usain Bolt Gets ‘Out of Breath’ Walking Up Stairs

Olympic legend Usain Bolt still holds numerous world records from his dominant track and field career and will undoubtedly go down as one of the most accomplished athletes in history. Now, however, it’s pretty clear that he is not in the same physical condition that he used to be.

Bolt’s Legendary Career

Widely regarded as the fastest sprinter of all time, Usain Bolt is an eight-time Olympic gold medalist who still holds world records in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and 4 x 100 meters relay.

Bolt is the only sprinter to win Olympic 100 meters and 200 meters titles at three consecutive Olympics, accomplishing the feat at the 2008, 2012, and 2016 Olympic Games.

Not only does Bolt hold the world record in the 100 meters, but he actually has the three fastest times, and no other human has come within a tenth of a second of his winning time.

No Longer in Running Shape

Bolt is one of the most legendary athletes on the planet, but at 39 years old, it sounds like he is not in anywhere near the same physical condition that he was when he was competing nearly a decade ago.

During a recent interview session with reporters at the World Athletic Championships, Bolt admitted that he does not really run all that much anymore and even gets winded when he walks up the stairs.

“I mostly do gym workouts,” Bolt told reporters via US Weekly. “I’m not a fan, but I think now that I’ve been out for a while, I have to actually start running because, when I walk up stairs, I get out of breath.”

Bolt, who retired from sprinting back in 2017, suffered an Achilles injury while playing in a charity soccer match in June 2024. That has kept him from running the way he would like, but it sounds like he would like to get back at it.

“I think when I start working on it fully again, I will probably have to do some laps just to get my breathing right,” Bolt said.

Family Man These Days

Another thing keeping Bolt from achieving peak physical fitness is his dedication to his family. Bolt explained that much of his time these days revolves around his children.

“Normally, I wake up just in time to see the kids off to school, and then it depends on what I have to do,” he said. “If I have nothing to do, I just chill out. I might work out sometimes if I’m in a good mood. I just watch some series and chill until the kids come home.”

“I spend some time with them, hang out, until they start annoying me then I leave,” he joked.

Bolt had some superhuman performances during his career, but it sounds like his life these days is much more ordinary.
