Man found near Sea Point Pavilion suspected to have drowned

Emergency services were called to Sunset Beach early on Thursday morning after a body was discovered near Sea Point Pavilion in Cape Town.

Sea Point SAPS received a call, and on arrival at the scene, police officers and Law Enforcement members saw the body and requested the help of the Western Cape Provincial Water Policing and Diving Services, who retrieved the body.

While it is a suspected drowning, a post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

At this stage, all that has been confirmed is that the deceased was 29-years-old.

Brief statement

The Atlantic Seaboard Community Forum confirmed in a brief statement that authorities were seen cordoning off parts of the area as teams began their initial investigation.

“Law enforcement agencies are currently attending to the scene,” the forum posted on its official Facebook page, alongside a photo of responders near the shoreline.

Ward 54 Councillor Nicola Jowell also confirmed the incident on social media.

The discovery has raised concern among residents, with many taking to social media to express shock and sympathy.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) and City law enforcement are expected to release further updates once a preliminary investigation has been completed.

Third death in a month

This is not the first time a body has washed up in the same area in the last couple of weeks.

On 31 August, a man’s body was discovered near the Sea Point tidal pool. He is also suspected to have drowned.

That particular incident followed another tragedy on the Sea Point Promenade on Sunday, 24 August, when a man in his 40s was found dead with a gunshot wound. It is suspected he had taken his own life.
