AUGUSTA, Ga (WJBF) – Seeing colorful things at an arts festival isn’t a surprise, but this is different.
“I love what I’m seeing! The creativity is just great. I love the colors and everything I think everybody should come and check it out,” said Kimberly Hughes.
It’s bombs away at the 9th Street entrance to Arts in the Heart. It’s called “yarn bombing”, the street art practice of decorating trees with fibers.
“It’s not actually affecting any of the trees, we put it up very safely, we take it down very safely. It’s here for the week after the festival, as well,” said Heather Dunaway, who coordinated the yarn bombing for Arts in the Heart.
These yarn bombers incorporated media discs into one piece and check out the big yellow headed snake hugging the tree, Erica did that one.
“Yes I’m a yarn bomber. Yarn bombers are a group of artists. We love to install yarn in public places whenever we get a chance,” said artist Erica Pastecki.
Yarn bombers are like urban guerrilla artists who must possess the skills of knitting and crocheting.
“It looks cool, it looks neat,” said Mike Jones.
“Have you ever yarn bombed in your life?”
“Never. Couldn’t ever start. Don’t even know how,” he said.
“I have never knitted anything, or yarn bombed anything and have no desire too,” said Jeff Adams.
“You’re not in a crocheting circle?”
“I’m not. Maybe I come off as a guy that does that,” he said.
“You do.”
