Notorious underworld figure Nafiz Modack has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for corruption, with three years suspended for five years, meaning he will serve an effective seven years behind bars.
The sentencing follows a conviction on 6 June 2025, after a high-level investigation by the Hawks revealed that Modack paid a total of R146 000 in bribes to former senior police officer, Brigadier Kolindren Govender, in exchange for special treatment.
Luxury vehicle
According to the Hawks, the payments were made to interfere with an investigation involving a luxury Mercedes-Benz vehicle.
Brigadier Govender intervened to prevent cooperation between SAPS officers, ensuring the vehicle – central to the probe – was not seized.

Govender has since pleaded guilty and was sentenced separately after admitting to the corrupt relationship with Modack.
Govender received a five-year sentence, suspended for four and a half years after pleading guilty to being in a corrupt relationship with Modack.
Nafiz Modack is also on trial for alleged tax evasion and another matter where he faces 122 charges for various crimes related to allegedly operating a criminal enterprise.
His actions form part of a larger investigation into corrupt ties between criminals and police officials, spearheaded by the Hawks.
‘Dismantle corruption’
As part of the ruling, the court also declared Modack unfit to possess a firearm.
“This sentence is a significant victory in our ongoing efforts to dismantle corruption within the criminal justice system,” said Acting Hawks Provincial Head, Brigadier Ramovha.
“We commend the investigators and prosecutors whose dedication ensured this outcome.”
The conviction marks a major step in the Hawks’ continued campaign to expose and prosecute corrupt networks that threaten the integrity of law enforcement and public trust.
