The Democratic Alliance (DA) federal council chairperson, Helen Zille, has accepted the party’s nomination to run for Mayor of Johannesburg.
Party leader John Steenhuisen believes Zille can bring positive change to the city, pointing to areas where the DA governs outright as examples of effective service delivery.
With honest, experienced, and accountable leadership, he believes Johannesburg can become a world-class city.
STEENHUISEN SLAMS LEADERSHIP CRISIS IN JOBURG
Addressing DA supporters in Soweto on Saturday, 20 September, Steenhuisen said the city suffers from a lack of leadership. He warned that “decay” has taken root in Johannesburg and cannot be allowed to continue.
“Johannesburg is a city of extraordinary people. People who get things done. People whose energy moves the South African economy. It has an R83 billion budget and everything it needs to thrive. What it doesn’t have is leadership. What we have today is not governance. It is decay. And it cannot continue,” said Steenhuisen.
The DA leader argued that Johannesburg needs a “good dose of muthi” to revive it and said the city has the potential to turn around.
“The next local government election is not DA vs African National Congress (ANC). It is a choice between decay and renewal. It is about voting against a party that has proven – even to itself – that it cannot and will not put your needs first. And it is about voting for a party that has a proven record of service delivery,” he said.
ZILLE PROMISES SERVICE DELIVERY
Echoing his sentiments, Zille said Johannesburg needs more than promises. The former Cape Town mayor stressed the need for leaders who deliver basic services and put residents first.
“Together we can make the City of Gold shine on our country, our continent, and the world. It’s all about getting the basics right and getting rid of the crooks,” said Zille.
