Baby Proteas crush Barbados in Netball World Youth Cup opener

The Baby Proteas opened their 2025 Netball World Youth Cup campaign in Gibraltar with a resounding 102-27 victory over Barbados.

This marked the team’s highest-ever score against Barbados and their 31st win in the tournament’s history.

Barbados were first on the scoreboard, but South Africa quickly responded and took charge.

By the end of the opening quarter, South Africa had surged ahead 25-7, with attacking duo Giada Prinsloo and Luane Smith leading the charge.

Reflecting on the team’s effort, coach Precious Mthembu said, “What a great performance tonight. The team stayed disciplined, executed the plan, and every player contributed.”

SPAR BABY PROTEAS MAINTAIN DOMINANCE

Building on their early momentum, South Africa’s dominance grew as the match unfolded.

At half-time, the Baby Proteas led 54-15, before stretching the scoreline to 77-21 in the third quarter.

Wing defence Phophi Nematangari played a crucial role, winning key intercepts and marshalling the backline.

The victory came despite a last-minute change to the squad, after Jade Atkins was withdrawn due to injury and replaced by Renezia Andrews.

After a strong send-off from home, the Baby Proteas now turn their attention to their Pool D clash against Trinidad & Tobago on Monday, 22 September at 10:00.
