Petco to Shut Down Dozens of Stores in Coming Months

Petco — the second largest pet retailer in the country — announced it would be closing 25 stores in 2025 due to declining sales.

The company already closed 25 stores in 2024. The pet supply store has over 1,400 stores nationwide.

Petco has “been accelerating initiatives to strengthen our operating model,” the company told Newsweek, which is in line with its “broader transformation to drive sustainable, profitable growth over the long term.”

According to the outlet, Petco’s net sales dropped by more than 2 percent in the second quarter of 2025.

“As we look ahead to the remainder of this year, we will continue to execute on our objectives while also leaning into select targeted investments that we believe will help set the stage for a return to sustainable profitable growth,” CEO Joel Anderson said last month.

Petco’s Chief Financial Officer Sabrina Simmons also explained that the impact of Trump’s tariffs “will become sequentially more meaningful as we move through the back half [of 2025].”

Which Petco Locations Are Closing?

While Petco has not released a full list of locations that will shut their doors by the end of the year, 13 stores have already shuttered, Fast Companyreported.
