Zarah Sultana and Jeremy Corbyn coming together to launch a party to truly represent the left in a way that many of us have felt no longer exists under the current Labour positioning should have been the biggest cause for celebration. I registered for more information instantly – because it was the most politically inspired and motivated I felt in absolutely years. And yet, even from the off, things seemed to be going wrong. But nothing went as wrong as everything that happened with the party last week that resulted in a sign up that then got taken down and big statements from the party versus Zarah Sultana, who has both threatened and now dropped legal action against the other major involved people in Your Party. It’s a lot, it’s disappointing and it’s frustrating – so here’s what’s actually happened as Zarah Sultana and Jeremy Corbyn fight and Your Party feels increasingly doomed.
An email was sent out asking people to sign up and pay
The email I received said that Your Party membership portal was open and it was time to sign up. This didn’t go down particularly well because people signed up and sent money before a second email came.
An urgent warning was then issued
Things got messy when everyone who’d signed up then got an urgent email warning us to cancel direct debits. The email said “This morning, an unauthorised email was sent to all yourparty.uk supporters with details of a supposed membership portal hosted in a new domain name. Legal advice is being taken. That email should be ignored by all supporters. If any direct debits have been set up, they should be immediately cancelled.”
It was signed off by MPs Jeremy Corbyn, Ayoub Khan, Adnan Hussain, Iqbal Mohamed and Shockat Adam. Zarah Sultana was not on the list on this email.
After that email went out, Zarah Sultana posted a scathing statement

In a statement, she insisted that “the portal was properly launched in accordance with the party’s roadmap” and stressed that “at no point was members’ data misused or put at risk. All funds received from members were ringfenced and protected in the appropriate manner.”
Sultana branded the allegations “baseless attacks on my character” that were “politically-motivated,” adding that she has instructed “specialist defamation lawyers” and will not be making further comment while legal proceedings are considered.
Zarah Sultana claimed she was encountering a “sexist boys club”, and the fight with Jeremy Corbyn and the others over Your Party instantly seemed irreparable. Not the best launch for what was meant to be hope for us all.
On Sunday night, Zarah Sultana backtracked on this in the interest of the party

On Sunday 21st, it all changed again after Zarah Sultana released a new statement about the future of Your Party and addressing the fight with Jeremy Corbyn directly.
Zarah wrote “Over the past few days, I have spoken with comrades across our movement. For the sake of the party, and as an act of good faith, I will not be pursuing legal proceedings despite the baseless and unsubstantiated allegations against me. The directors of MOU Operations Ltd have issued a welcome statement clarifying the legal and financial situation.
“I know many people are feeling demoralised – I share that feeling. We find ourselves in a regrettable situation, but my motivation has always been to ensure the collective strength of our movement, put members first and build the genuinely democratic conference and socialist party we so urgently need.
“I am determined to reconcile and move forward. I am engaged in ongoing discussions with Jeremy, for whom, like all socialists of my generation, I have nothing but respect. We will find a way to continue in a unified way centring the grassroots of our movement. I am certain this is possible – indeed, it must be.
“Fascism is growling at the door. The stakes are too high for failure to be an option. Both Jeremy and I remain committed to making this project a success – and we can all confirm that the conference will go ahead as planned in November”
Whilst it’s definitely progress that Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana are putting their fight behind them, I do have to worry that I fear it might be too late for Your Party to now be taken seriously. And I say that as a huge supporter of both – but is the damage done?
