The Ryder Cup 2025 gets underway this week as Team Europe look to retain their title against Team USA at Bethpage Black in New York.

Europe stormed to victory in Rome in 2023 under Luke Donald, and the former World No1 has returned to captain the side again two years later as he hopes to guide them to an unlikely victory on away soil.

Almost all of his 12-man team from Marco Simone remains in tact two years later, with the only change seeing Rasmus Hojgaard replace his twin brother Nicolai Hojgaard.

Keegan Bradley, meanwhile, leads the US team, which won in record fashion at Whistling Straits when the tournament was last hosted in America in 2021.

Bradley, ranked 13th in the world, opted not to select himself as a playing captain, but has an array of talent to call upon, including World No1 Scottie Scheffler and LIV Golf superstar Bryson DeChambeau.

A boisterous crowd in New York is expected to greet both sets of players, with the long and demanding set-up of Bethpage Black set to prove an entertaining backdrop for the three-day matchplay event.

Ahead of the first tee shot on Friday, here is everything you need to know, including the tee times, schedule, format and how to watch on TV in the UK.

What is the format for the Ryder Cup? Foursomes and fourballs explained

Each of the first two days of the Ryder Cup will feature a four-match session on foursomes and a four-match session of fourballs.

The US have elected to start with foursomes, which sees two golfers from each team pair up and play alternate shots using the same ball. The best score on each hole wins, with a tie if the scores are equal.

In the afternoon sessions, the teams then compete in four fourball matches, with two golfers from each team pairing up but, this time, using their own ball. The lowest score from either player is used for the team’s overall score for that hole with the best score winning the hole.

Players can play in all four sessions across the first two days, but with only eight slots available for each session some of the 12-man team are rested each time. Each player has to play in at least one session across the first two days.

The third and final day consists of singles matches where one player from Team Europe competes against another player from Team USA. This is standard matchplay, with the best score on each hole winning. All twelve members from each team have to compete in these matches.

There are 28 points at stake in total, with a point being awarded for winning a match, or half a point given to each team if there is a tie after 18 holes. In a similar fashion to the Ashes, if the overall score is tied at 14-14 come the end of Sunday, the holders (Team Europe) will retain the trophy.
