While Spirit Airlines is in the midst of bankruptcy and trying to bring back financial glory, it has put into effect a new valuable benefit for Free Spirit Travel More Mastercard holders. The budget airline launched today, September 23, the ability for travelers to check two free checked bags.
The new feature applies to every Spirit Airlines flight a traveler books with the card and eliminates the stress of having to pay for an extra checked bag. There are a few guidelines to follow if wanting to take advantage of the upgrade.
Like most airlines, both checked bags cannot exceed the weight limit of 50 pounds and must meet the standard checked bag requirements. Travelers must also book their flight directly on the airline’s website or through its mobile app.
They must also ensure their Spirit Travel More Mastercard is linked to their Free Spirit account. Activation of the card may take up to seven days for a new member.
One rule to be aware of is that only primary cardholders are allowed to use the two checked bag perk. This means that anyone else traveling with you on the same reservation cannot take advantage of the perk.
The Mastercard also offers certain perks like Priority Check-In, Priority Boarding, and space-available upgrades to Premium Economy and Spirit First. It also offers in-flight discounts and travel points.
The new upgrade by Spirit is part of its restructuring plan after filing for bankruptcy for a second time in a year. Spirit cut flights to major cities to focus on profitable destinations, as well as being granted an emergency fund to continue operations.
A recent report revealed the budget airline plans to further cut costs, which will lead to 1,800 flight attendants being laid off. Meanwhile, Spirit’s competitors have instead added more flight paths to fill in the gap left by the airline.
