Marriott’s executives hosted 75 loyalty members at their headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland, this week. The group, which included Marriott’s Chairman of the Board, David Marriott, clued in loyalty members about the company’s upcoming new features.

It turns out, the so-called loyalty members were also given a lesson on how to properly pronounce the hotel’s name.

During a Q&A session with the hotel chain’s chairman of the board, Marriott revealed to the loyal members that the hotel’s name is pronounced meh-ree-uht, not meh-ree-aat.

Marriott said pronouncing his family’s name is similar to how one would pronounce the name “Elliott.”

Mind blown.

A Marriott loyalty member recorded the nugget and posted it on TikTok. She captioned the post, “Were you pronouncing it wrong like I have been? I’m still a Marriott girlie but now I say it differently. Lol.”

It’s quite possible that Marriott’s lesson may have come too little, too late.

One fan commented on the video, “It’s too late 😂,” while another hilariously commented, “I worked for Marriott 5 years and this is how I find out?😭.”

Another commented, “So basically the CEO needs to send out a memo, because the people working there pronounce it wrong. Lol.”

According to travel industry intelligence site Skift, Marriott Hotels hosting 75 of its loyalty members for a “Members Day” is a first for major hotel groups.

Among the previews Marriott introduced to members are an AI chatbot for travel booking, as well as a focus group.

And a lesson on pronouncing the company’s name correctly.
