PROGRESS.— The transport businessman Luis Martin Alonzo Morales considers that the expansion of the navigation channel and modernization of the Progreso high port It is a work of vital importance for maritime and port activity.
He also considered it necessary for the docking of larger ships that transport more cargo.
Director of Direct Freighta company that provides cargo transportation service in the high-altitude port, Alonzo Morales refers that 40 years after the remote terminal was built and 25 years since the navigation channel was expanded and built, the Modernization of port facilities has great economic and social impact in the Mexican southeast.
“A blunder”
He also said that suspending the dredging of the navigation channel and filling of 80 hectares to expand the capacity of the deep-sea port means a blunder, which will cause economic losses and delays in the work.

The businessman, with experience in the cargo transportation sector and knowledge of port facilities, indicated that the navigation channel is a work that has existed for 25 years and since it was dredged there was a Environmental Impact Manifesto (MIA).
It is not a new work, he commented, what is being done is to expand this maritime infrastructure and deepen the draft to facilitate the arrival of larger vessels in length, beam and loading capacity.
“As the canal is wider and has a deeper draft, large ships, both containerized cargo and bulk carriers, cruise ships and tankers, will be able to maneuver without major problems to dock at the specialized terminals.”.
The navigation channel is not lengthening, it maintains the same length, it deepens in the channel and widens in width; It is expanded to receive ships of greater draft, size and load, he pointed out.
Alonzo Morales considered that the work is necessary, the benefit is for the entire Mexican southeast, positions Progreso as a strategic port for global tradeas one of the main ports of the Gulf of Mexico.
The modernization of the high port, he added, includes the elevated viaduct for the transit of cargo trucks, a road that should not be tolled, but free.
The construction of two platforms of 40 hectares – each one will be filled with dredging material – will allow the installation of new specialized terminals, more docking positions, will attract more investments and job creation in which, first-hand, the people of Progreso are the ones who will benefit.
Dredging
In the request for protection presented by Juan Medina Rejón, photographs of the erosion of the traditional seawall are attached, a problem that has been occurring for more than a year, before dredging work on the navigation channel began.
