The iPhone Air, which was introduced in September 2025 as part of the iPhone 17 series, was originally intended to be Apple’s technological highlight. Apple wanted to set new standards with an extremely flat design, a powerful Pro processor and an innovative camera. But the initial enthusiasm seems to have quickly faded as sales figures fall short of expectations.
Apple has reportedly significantly reduced production of the iPhone Air after less than a month on sale. The Japanese investment company Mizuho Securities reports that around one million fewer devices will be manufactured than originally planned. This decision reflects the weak demand also experienced by the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, a similarly designed model that also failed to achieve the expected success.
The parallels between the iPhone Air and the Galaxy S25 Edge are striking. Both models rely on a particularly thin housing, but this was not enough to convince consumers. The high price and the lack of differentiation from other models seem to be the main reasons for the lack of interest. Samsung has already decided not to continue the Edge series, which raises the question of whether Apple is considering a similar move.
Nevertheless, there is also positive news for Apple. The other models in the iPhone 17 series, especially the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro Max, are selling better than their predecessors. The production numbers of these models were increased by two million units each, indicating strong demand. The regular iPhone 17 is even outselling the iPhone 16, showing that Apple is on a solid track overall.
Analysts like Ming-Chi Kuo believe that Apple has planned the iPhone Air for at least three model cycles. This could mean that the company is giving the model a second chance, perhaps with adjustments that are better suited to market needs. The coming months will show whether Apple will rethink its strategy for the iPhone Air or whether it will remain part of the product portfolio.
