Mário Fernandes, general retired from Brazilian Armyadmitted to being the author of a plan to assassinate the current Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in 2022, within the alleged coup attempt to keep Jair Bolsonaro in power, according to local media.
The Brazilian authorities explained that this plan also included kidnapping or killing the current vice president, Geraldo Alckminand to the Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraesinstructor of the cases against Bolsonaro in the high court.
Fernandes, who was a member of the General Secretariat of the Presidency in the Bolsonaro Government (2019-2022), confessed to being behind the so-called “Green and Yellow Dagger” plan when questioned on Thursday in the Supreme Courtwhere the trial for the coup attempt progresses.
Bolsonaro’s former advisor is convicted in the case, as is the former head of state, who is accused of “leading” the frustrated coup plot to annul the October 2022 elections and preventing the Lula’s investiturewhich ended up happening on January 1, 2023.
The accusation against the former president is in a more advanced phase and the oral trial is expected to be held between September and October. In the case of Fernandes, the reserve general acknowledged that he printed the document with the plan to assassinate Lulawhich he reduced to “a digitalized thought” and just a “situation study.”
The investigation indicated that three copies of that document were printed in the Planalto Palaceheadquarters of the Brazilian Government, in Brasiliaand Bolsonaro was aware of it. “Jair Bolsonaro closely followed the evolution of the scheme and the possible date of its full execution,” said the complaint from Attorney General Paulo Gonet.
However, Fernandes assured in his interrogation, leaked by local media, that he did not show him or share the document with anyone and that, shortly after, he tore it up. “Today I regret having digitized it,” he noted.
Last February, the Prosecutor’s Office denounced 34 people for the coup plot, including Bolsonaro, whom it accused of being the “leader” of the organization with the support of former ministers and high-ranking soldiers.
The 70-year-old former president denies that he tried to stage a coup and maintains that he only sought “alternatives” within the Constitution, after being defeated by Lula in the 2022 elections.
