Squid Game is a fictional story, but did you know the place where it’s set is actually a real South Korean island? It’s just as creepy in real life as it looks in the show.
The third and final season just dropped on Netflix, bringing an end to Gi-hun’s incredible story in the most brutal way – and the entire premise of the games is entirely made up.
However, lots of the show is based on real themes. Even the evil VIPs take inspiration from a real-life group of people, and the chilling island where the games are set is real too.
Squid Game is set on a real island
The Squid Game island is a real place in South Korea called Seongapdo Island. It’s a privately owned, uninhabited island that’s only 3.65 square kilometers and is shaped like a crescent moon.
South Korea actually has 3,358 islands and this one is just off the coast of Incheon, a city located in the northwest. That’s why it took Jun-ho so long to explore them all in the series.
Seongapdo Island is completely empty, giving it that eerie and isolated feel that you get in the series. It has a rocky, mountainous landscape with lots of pine trees and a volcanic crater lake.
Nobody knows who owns it, but the island is completely isolated the majority of the time, except for when Squid Game is filming of course. Who knows what goes on there the rest of the time?
A lot of the time, shows will be set in one place but filmed somewhere entirely different. However, Squid Game’s exterior shots were all filmed on Seongapdo Island, making it seem even more real.
The interior scenes were shot in studio sets. So, no sets were actually built on the uninhabited island.

Here are the other filming locations
A lot of the series was filmed around the South Korean capital Seoul, including a small residential neighbourhood called Ssangmun-dong, the city’s Dobong District, Seoul Forest Subway Station, Namsan Mountain Park and N Seoul Tower.
The city of Incheon was used a lot too, especially Incheon International Airport, which is seen in various scenes. Wolmido Island and Wolmi Theme Park were also used for the show.
All of the indoor sets, like the crazy kids’ games, were created in Daejeon’s Expo Science Park, a huge building with filming facilities. However, they have now been demolished after season three.
