The takeover of the Californian startup Orbillion Bio by the US biotech company Fork & Good represents a significant step in the development of cultivated meat. Orbillion Bio, co-founded by Graz-born Patricia Bubner, specializes in the production of meat products that not only taste better, but are also produced more sustainably. This merger aims to create a leading player in cultured meat products, particularly beef and pork.

Patricia Bubner, who originally came to the USA for a research stay, founded Orbillion Bio in Silicon Valley with the aim of reducing the ecological impact of meat production. After participating in the renowned Y-Combinator accelerator and a successful seed round of $5 million, Orbillion Bio was able to enter into a partnership with the Dutch meat processor Luiten Food. With the acquisition by Fork & Good, Bubner will be named Chief Operating Officer of the new company.

Fork & Good, based in Jersey City, has developed a scalable technology for culturing pig muscle cells. Orbillion Bio, on the other hand, is one of the first companies in the world to be able to cultivate bovine muscle cells on an industrial scale. Together, they have the largest cultivated meat IP portfolio in the world. This combination enables faster production, shorter supply chains and more flexibility with regulatory requirements.

A central aspect of the merger is Fork & Good’s so-called “margin-first” approach. The aim is to first prove viable cost structures on a medium scale before large production facilities follow. This is intended to show that cultured meat is not only technologically but also economically feasible. The strategic bundling of the technologies and market presence of both companies is intended to increase security of supply in the meat sector and offer manufacturers alternatives to classic supply chains.

The financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed, but the focus is on strategically combining technologies and market presence in the cultured meat sector. The merger of Fork & Good and Orbillion Bio could therefore have a significant impact on the future development of the meat industry by setting new standards for sustainability and efficiency.
