The video clip published by the American club Inter Miami to announce the renewal of the contract of its Argentine star Lionel Messi received great attention from the Spanish media because of the messages and implications it carried.
Last Thursday, Inter Miami announced the renewal of Messi’s (38 years old) contract for an additional 3 years, that is, until December 2028.
Messi and Inter Miami chose to sign the contract at the construction site of the new Miami Freedom Park stadium, a choice that was not a mere coincidence and carried an indirect message to Barcelona’s management, according to the Spanish newspaper “Mundo Deportivo”.

The newspaper pointed out that Messi’s talk in the video clip about Miami Freedom Park being his new home, and that his saying, “It would be a very special thing to play in a stadium like this,” is “an indirect message to those who caused his departure from the Catalan club, and he still does not want to communicate with them.”
A painful message from Messi to Barcelona fans during his renewal of Inter Miami
The continuation of the Argentine star’s professional career constitutes a “pricking prick” in the hearts of Barcelona fans who wished for him to be the man of the one club, as the newspaper described it, meaning that he would begin and end his career in the ranks of the Blaugrana, which is what the player himself also wanted.
The newspaper said, “It would have been an ideal conclusion to Messi’s career if he had returned to inaugurate Barcelona’s new stadium (Spotify Camp Nou) as a player in the Catalan team, but after renewing his contract with Inter Miami until 2028, which is the expected date for the completion of work on the new stadium, Barcelona fans feel some nostalgia and bitterness.”
It is noteworthy that Messi explained the reasons for his continuation in the American League in an interview with the American channel “NBC News” by saying, “I feel in good condition physically and mentally to continue playing. I am happy with life in Miami, and so is my family.”
On the other hand, Barcelona has succeeded in achieving many titles since Messi left the team in August 2021, despite the psychological pressures and administrative crises that have plagued the team in recent seasons.
Barcelona won two league titles, one with Xavi Hernandez and the other with German Hansi Flick, and a new generation of La Masia Academy talents emerged, most notably Lamine Gamal, who appears to be the most prominent star and captain of the team in January 2028 when Barcelona’s new covered stadium with a capacity of 105,000 spectators opens.
