A remarkable transformation has occurred in Endicott, a small town in upstate New York. The former First United Methodist Church, an early 20th century architectural gem, has been transformed into a vibrant creative space for artists. This initiative was started by David Dzuba, who saved the church from demolition to preserve its impressive stained glass windows and historical significance.
Dzuba, who purchased the church, had a clear vision from the start: He wanted to create a space that would both inspire artists and serve the community. The space currently houses twelve artists, including members of the Fine Art Society of the Southern Tier and the Broome County Arts Council. Artists have access to eight studios, two galleries and a special art program for children with autism.
However, the transformation of the church goes beyond the creation of work spaces. Future plans include turning the nave into a performing arts venue, opening a cafe and opening the space to the general public. These plans underscore Dzuba’s commitment to establishing the church as a cultural center that enriches the local arts scene.
Collaboration with the Broome County Arts Council plays a critical role in achieving this vision. Zoha Khan, the council’s Community Outreach Coordinator, emphasizes the importance of working together to transform the space into a local arts hub. Dzuba hopes that the space will not only inspire artists, but also become a welcoming community space where people come together regularly to experience and appreciate art.
This initiative shows how historic buildings can take on new meanings through creative use. Not only does it provide a platform for artists, but it also strengthens a sense of community while preserving a piece of local history. Dzuba sees his efforts as a contribution to preserving the region’s cultural identity and hopes that the space will be preserved for future generations.
