Adapting a popular book series into a television show can often prove trickier than expected.
For all the loyal readers there are out there waiting to see their favourite novel translated onto the big screen, there is an equally ferocious group of fans waiting to pick apart any incorrect details or oversights.
For Disney Plus, who released the first season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians in 2023, viewers appeared to be delighted with the re-telling of Rick Riordan’s best-selling series.
Now, following the release of the second season today, fans are heaping even more praise on the streaming service for delivering a ‘perfect’ and ‘amazing’ adaptation.
Taking to Rotten Tomatoes, where the show currently holds a 100% rating, @sanazuyu said: ‘The improvement from season one is crazy. Definitely will be tuning in for the next episode.’
@luvekelsey also heaped praise on the new release, saying that they ‘cant wait for future episodes’.
Meanwhile, Paige L added: ‘It was amazing I can’t wait for the next episode.’
But it wasn’t just fans who were impressed with the new eight-part series, as many critics even argued that it was superior to the first.
OpenCritic writer Joonatan Itkonen said that it was ‘as exciting, inventive, and wholly entertaining as the first season’ in what is a ‘welcome return’.
Federica Bocco also argued: ‘It’s not often that a show maintains a level of high-quality writing throughout an entire 8-episode arc, it’s even rarer to carry that over to another season.
‘So far, Disney’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians is succeeding, and what a joy it is to see it.
What other book adaptations are coming out soon?
‘Having had the privilege to preview the first half of season 2 (and rewatch it obsessively), I can confidently say that the show’s sophomore season had a very high bar to reach, and it is absolutely delivering.’
The Disney Plus original series tells the story of a 12-year-old modern demigod, Percy Jackson, who’s coming to terms with his newfound divine powers when the sky god Zeus accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt.
With help from his friends Grover and Annabeth, Percy embarks on an adventure of a lifetime to find it and restore order to Olympus.
So far, only two episodes of the eight-part series have been released, and viewers can look forward to one episode per week being shown until the season two finale on January 21.
After the first season was released, viewers called it a ‘perfect’ adaptation of the book series compared to the 2010 film of the same name.
When the 2023 TV series was released, Riordan maintained that he had never seen the film adaptation as it ‘missed the mark’.
He told Metro exclusively: ‘The 59-year-old author explained: ‘I’ve never seen the movies. Many people love the films and I am aware of that and the actors are incredibly talented.
‘However, as an adaptation of Percy Jackson the books? It missed the mark by a long shot, in my opinion.’
He continued: ‘One of the reasons we wanted to do this again now and as a TV show is that a television show allows us to properly tell the story over eight episodes that in a 90 minute movie you simply can’t do.’
