RuPaul’s Drag Race icon Amanda Tori Meating has shared a life-changing update regarding her transition and announces that she’s going on a social media hiatus and a break from drag. Amanda Tori Meating quickly became a fan favourite on RuPaul’s Drag Race season 16 – notoriously through how hilarious she was but also because she had some of the quickest and most confident put downs when scrapping with Plane Jane. Amanda Tori Meating came out as a trans woman on the show, and has been open with how being on the show helped her affirm her gender identity. Now, the Drag Race icon announces a major update in her journey and explains why she’s going on a social media break.

Amanda Tori Meating came out as a trans woman whilst on Drag Race season 16 – and has openly said in the past how the show helped her to affirm her gender identity. Amanda explained previously: “But honestly, being on set and having people call me Amanda all the time, like ‘she/her ’ing me…push[ed] me out of the nest a little bit and crack[ed] the egg.”
Now in a big update on her social media, Amanda explains “On Monday I undergo life changing gender affirming surgery.
Whenever people have asked me lately how/what I’m feeling, my response has usually been ‘I feel all of it!’. So many thoughts and feelings flying around inside this big beautiful brain, but here’s a few of them for your enjoyment:
“The first feeling is immense pride in myself for making it to this part. In the most non woe is me-way possible, the last two years have felt like an absolute sh*tstorm of emotions as I navigated my Saturn Return, finally took the leap of starting my medical transition, went on RuPaul’s Drag Race, and everything that’s happened since.
“I’m proud of myself for weathering the storm. I’m proud of myself for making all of the phone calls and jumping through all the hoops necessary to get this surgery. I’m proud of myself for seeing what’s no longer serving me and having the courage to shed it.
The next feeling is a profound sense of gratitude for all of you. See, I keep this ego in check so you don’t have to.
“But genuinely everyone reading this, everyone who donated to my recovery fund, everyone who has been there for me in any capacity during this time, everyone who has left a nice comment or sent a nice message, I promise mommy is just deeply ADHD and gets too overwhelmed to respond to all of it sometimes BUT I see it all and it truly does lift my spirits when I’m feeling low.
“I could not have done this without all of your support. The fact that I am able to take the next few weeks to recover without having to worry about basic necessities like rent/food/etc is such a gift, and it’s a gift I don’t take for granted. Thank you from the bottom of my heart – and any time you see a trans person post a crowdfunding link, just know that every dollar and every share truly does help us so if you’re down to Protect The Dolls, this is one of the things that entails!”
Amanda then further explained how she will be taking a break from social media following her gender affirming surgery. The Drag Race icon says she will be taking a social media break in order to prioritise journalling again, and that her bestie will instead be helping to post on her socials to maintain engagement.
Sending so much love and good healing energy to Amanda on this huge step with her gender affirming surgery!
