The son of former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, asked the Trump Government this Thursday to help combat drug trafficking off the coast of Brazil as it already does in the Pacific and the Caribbean by sinking alleged drug boats in the Pacific and the Caribbean.
“What envy! I have heard that there are ships like this here in Rio de Janeiro, in Guanabara Bay, flooding Brazil with drugs. Wouldn’t you like to spend a few months here helping us fight these terrorist organizations?” Flávio wrote on his networks, addressing the secretary of the US War Department, Pete Hegseth.
This is not the first time that the Bolsonaro family has asked the Trump Administration for help, which it has already turned to for torpedo the trial which led to a 27-year prison sentence for the head of state for the attempted coup d’état.
Thus, the Secretary of State of the United States, Marco Rubio, announced in July the revocation of the visa of the investigating judge in the case against Bolsonaro, Alexandre de Moraes, for carrying out an “witch hunt” against the former president. Sanction also imposed on his family and his “allies”, seven other judges of the Brazilian Supreme Court.
Bolsonaro reacted to a publication made on Wednesday by Hegseth in which he reported another “lethal kinetic attack” against a boat in the Pacific Ocean, in which three people died. US Intelligence maintains that the boat was involved in drug trafficking.
That was the second attack in less than 24 hours in international waters near the Colombian Pacific coast, in the middle of the open crisis between Trump and the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro.
The offensive is part of the operation against drug trafficking undertaken by the North American power, which It also runs off the Venezuelan coastwhere they have sunk at least seven boats, causing around thirty deaths.
Brazil is a key exit route for drugs produced in Colombia, Peru and Bolivia. Much of the country’s drug trafficking is controlled by the First Capital Command (PCC), a criminal group born in the prisons of São Paulo in the 90s and with a presence in much of South America.
While he was in power, between 2019 and 2022, Jair Bolsonaro, under house arrest since last August 4, always defended a tough strategy against organized crime under the motto “a good bandit is a dead bandit”.
