Frankfurt Airport, operated by Fraport, recently put an innovative photovoltaic system into operation, which represents a significant step towards sustainability. This system, installed along the west runway, uses vertically arranged solar panels to maximize energy efficiency. Unlike traditional solar panels, which are often oriented horizontally, vertical panels allow for better use of sunlight in the morning and afternoon hours.

Equipped with around 37,000 modules, the system is expected to generate up to 17.4 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually. This amount of energy corresponds to the average annual consumption of around 5,500 households. The electricity generated is primarily used to air-condition the terminals and to support the constantly growing fleet of electric vehicles at the airport. This is an essential part of Fraport’s strategy to make airport operations completely CO2-neutral by 2045 at the latest.

A notable advantage of the vertical arrangement of solar panels is that they neither block sunlight nor impede precipitation. This allows plants to continue to thrive in the area, making it easier to integrate such systems into public spaces. This innovative use of solar technology could serve as a model for other airports and public facilities seeking to improve their environmental performance.

Fraport currently covers 90 percent of its energy needs through renewable energy sources such as solar and wind energy. A new contract with EnBW will enable the company to cover all of the Frankfurt site’s electricity needs from renewable sources from the middle of next year. This underlines Fraport’s commitment to a sustainable future and could inspire other companies to take similar steps.

While the focus is on the use of renewable energy, the airline operations themselves are excluded from this strategy. Nevertheless, Fraport’s initiative shows that airports can play an important role in the global effort to reduce CO2 emissions. The combination of technological innovation and strategic planning could pave the way for a greener future, where airports act not only as transport hubs but also as leaders in sustainability.
